A musician’s musician, showman and deeply soulful songwriter, Gary Lee Cox is the quintessential all-rounder. Understanding musical theory, mechanics, and spirit, he knew music would forever be his life when he first saw Buddy Guy at Austin City Limits.
A multi-instrumentalist with the finest guitar skills, Gary channels the greats so well you’d be forgiven for thinking SRV himself is in the room. Drawing in long-term fans and passers-by alike, his energy, enthusiasm, and joy for playing music is magnetic and you are guaranteed a night of laughs, dancing, and singing along when Gary is on the mic.
Gary’s own music comes from the deepest recesses of himself, as he pours out his experiences of love, life, happiness, and pain through music – the thread that has connected every part of his life since he first began playing as a child. Having played across the US and internationally, with his own band as well as playing with other artists, Gary can be found playing almost every night of the week in venues in and near Austin, Texas.
During daylight hours, you can find him at his music store – Texas Music Depot in Llano, TX – where he stocks, services, and repairs instruments, in between welcoming anyone with an interest or love of music in for a coffee or a jam.
In 1892, when Albert and Minnie Luckenbach sold their store in Luckenbach and moved 20 miles east to Martinsburg, the little town of Martinsburg was renamed “Albert”. The first local school was established in 1891, and in 1897, then Postmaster Otto Schumann opened the town’s first general store. By 1900, a new school building was erected that the young LBJ would attend.
The Albert Dance Hall was built in 1922 by Max Beckman, and provided the community a place for Saturday night dances and social gatherings. It featured German brass bands rotating between the Luckenbach, Hye and Weinheimer Dance Halls of the time.
Located just south of Highway 290, halfway between Fredericksburg and Johnson City, the tradition of community gatherings and dancing continues. We’re always happy to see familiar faces or make a new friend, so stop on by and enjoy a little taste of Texas tradition and a cold beer or cocktail while you’re at it. We’ve got live music most nights and our Icehouse and food truck, Bokita Gourmet Street Food; are both open everyday!
